Otoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to reshape or reposition the ears. It is commonly done to correct prominent or protruding ears, also known as “bat ears” or “lop ears,” where the ears stick out further from the head than desired. Otoplasty can also address other cosmetic issues such as reshaping misshapen ears or reducing the size of large ears.
During the procedure, the surgeon typically makes incisions behind the ear to access the cartilage. They may then reshape or remove excess cartilage as needed to achieve the desired appearance. In some cases, the surgeon may also manipulate the position of the ear to bring it closer to the head. Once the reshaping is complete, the incisions are closed with sutures.
Otoplasty is often performed on children around the age of 5 or 6, but it can be done at any age. In addition to its cosmetic benefits, otoplasty can also have psychological benefits by improving self-esteem and confidence, especially in children who may be teased or bullied because of the appearance of their ears. However, like any surgical procedure, otoplasty carries risks such as infection, bleeding, and anesthesia complications, so it’s essential to consult with a qualified surgeon to discuss the potential benefits and risks.
